Procrastination: How to avoid the greatest threat to motivation as a trainer?

No matter what walk of life are we talking about, two things are needed for constant development. One is to set clear goals ahead of ourselves, and the other is to fight for them. This formula might seem simple at first, but there is a tiny thing that can make your job considerably harder. It is called constant procrastination.

You must be familiar with the feeling when you’re just not in the mood for getting out of the bed, doing the housework and keep on telling yourself that in five minutes you’ll get down to it – without doing anything whatsoever. Many of us like this when it comes to training as well. We tend to procrastinate as long as we can and postpone exercising until eternity.

Let’s wait until Monday, or the first day of the next month, or while I’m at it, the New Year – eventually that’s the time for a fresh start!” This attitude is fundamentally flawed and it does not only prevent us from reaching our long term goals, but it also leaves its (negative) mark on our daily routine.

And if you’d like to work as a trainer, you have to consider that you have to motivate a lot of people, not just yourself. That’s why it’s inevitable that you save a lot of time for both your physical and mental development.

How to fight procrastination effectively?

There’s nothing more efficient in the fight against procrastination than constant inspiration and non-stop motivation. As a trainer, what could be bigger motivation than seeing your clients’ steady progress towards their goals? But in order to help your clients develop, you also have to aim for a steady growth and improvement.

Since it’s not only your time and energy you’re dealing with, you can’t act like a woodcutter with a blunt axe. If you don’t sharpen your tools because you don’t have enough time for it, your routine will also take twice as long as opposing to doing it with a proper toolset.

It’s important that you have enough time for improving yourself next to your trainings both physically and mentally. Read stuff from your field as much as you can, attend lectures and don’t shy away from modern tools that can make your job easier and smoother throughout your daily routine.
